#WhereAreTheUbryTerrells ... Leg 2: Texas

Observations so far from our road trip:

Baja is slow.
California is fast.
Arizona is hot.
New Mexico is cold.
Texas is windy.
And big.

By big, I mean that we never manage to spend less than a week in Texas. This time it was nearly 12 days.

Our first stop was right over the border in El Paso, where we went to my cousin (first cousin once removed, to be exact) Cyndi's house. She treated us to lunch at Kiki's, where we had some delicious Mexican food, followed by a drive to a scenic overlook where we stood at the end of the Rocky Mountains. (Epic!) While we were out running around, Jovi was enjoying Cyndi's beautiful backyard -- a nice change from the backseat of the car!

Three-and-a-half years ago Randy, Jovi and I made a similar journey, in reverse order, moving Jovi and me from Ohio to California. Randy and I had met 6 months before in Spain and knew we wanted to be together forever. Texas was a long and memorable part of that move, too. One of our favorite stops had been at the Y.O. Ranch in Kerrville, Texas. We realized that we would be going through Kerrville again and knew we had to stay. It was just as fabulous (though not as inexpensive! ouch!) as we remembered. We had a delicious dinner, enjoyed the rustic decor, and appreciated them being so pet-friendly.

Texas was starting to feel BIG about this point. Partly because it is. Partly because we can only go 55 mph even when the speed limit is 80 because we're pulling a trailer. We dropped off several pounds of luggage in New Mexico (for the next leg of this journey... stay tuned!), so at least our gas mileage has gone up from 9 mpg to a whopping 12!

Since we were passing through San Antonio next, we decided to stop and take a selfie with the Alamo. We got yelled at by a security guard because we had Jovi with us (no dogs allowed at the Alamo!), but she was welcomed on the riverwalk (which was cold and windy!).

Finally we arrived in Corpus Christi, where we enjoyed 5 days of fun and relaxation with my brother Matt, sister-in-law Jenn, and niece Riley. We caught up on movies (we haven't rented a movie in nearly 2 years!), went to hip hop class, visited the botanical gardens, hiked along nearby trails, ate tons of delicious food, listened to Riley read each night (she's not even 6 yet and a fantastic reader!), and went to the beach.

We'd made it from Mexico to the Gulf of Mexico -- 2,000 miles -- but still had another 1,000 to go to get to Ohio. Perhaps it was time to head north?

North meant Sugarland, just outside of Houston, where we enjoyed a great visit with my Uncle Jim and stayed the night with my cousin Susie. It was so nice to sleep in, do yoga and hot tub in the morning, and take our time getting on the road. Each time we stay with family reminds us of what we've missed -- feeling "at home."

While we are a long way away from "landing" (Ohio isn't actually the last stop of the journey... at least not yet), we will continue to appreciate every time someone shows us hospitality on the way!
